Business Problem

Pharmacies faced challenges with manual prescription processing, inaccurate inventory counts for medications, potential for drug dispensing errors, and difficulties in managing supplier orders and insurance claims efficiently. This led to operational bottlenecks, compliance risks, and compromised patient safety.

Solution

Developed a comprehensive PMS using Laravel, integrating with drug interaction databases for patient safety alerts, robust inventory management for medications, and a secure POS system for dispensing. Utilized Spatie Permission for secure access control and implemented queued jobs for automated supplier reorders and regulatory reporting.

Architecture

Modular architecture with Prescription Management, Drug Inventory, Point of Sale (POS), Supplier & Procurement, and Billing & Insurance modules. Employs a secure REST API for integration with EMR systems and utilizes WebSockets for real-time stock updates. Data encryption and audit trails ensure compliance with healthcare and pharmaceutical regulations.

Challenges

Ensuring real-time inventory accuracy for hundreds of thousands of drug SKUs, integrating with various insurance claim processing systems, accurately detecting drug interactions and allergies, and complying with stringent pharmaceutical regulatory reporting requirements while maintaining high system availability.

Performance Optimizations

Implemented Redis for caching drug information and frequently accessed patient profiles, optimized database queries for drug interaction checks and inventory lookups, utilized Laravel Horizon for efficient batch processing of supplier orders and inventory audits, and employed client-side validation for prescription entry to reduce errors.
