Real-time Courier Tracking System

Business Problem

Courier companies faced challenges with inefficient parcel tracking, manual delivery assignment, lack of real-time visibility for customers, and difficulties in managing driver schedules. This led to delayed deliveries, customer inquiries, and increased operational costs.

Solution

Developed a robust courier tracking system using Laravel, integrating with Google Maps API for real-time driver location and route optimization. Implemented parcel registration with unique tracking numbers, dynamic assignment to drivers, real-time status updates via WebSockets, and electronic proof of delivery. Utilized Laravel Horizon for managing high-volume tracking events and notifications.

Architecture

Event-driven architecture with Parcel Management, Driver & Dispatch Management, Real-time Tracking (Google Maps API), Proof of Delivery (POD), and Notification Service. Employs Redis for caching real-time driver locations and parcel statuses. Uses Laravel Echo with WebSockets for instant updates to customers, drivers, and dispatchers. Queued jobs handle SMS/email notifications and report generation.

Challenges

Ensuring accurate real-time GPS tracking across various mobile devices, optimizing delivery routes dynamically based on new pickups and traffic, securely capturing and storing electronic proof of delivery, managing high volumes of concurrent delivery status updates, and providing a scalable architecture for rapidly expanding courier networks.

Performance Optimizations

Implemented Redis for caching real-time driver positions and parcel statuses to ensure low-latency updates, optimized geographical queries for driver proximity and route deviation, utilized Laravel Horizon for scalable processing of tracking events and automated notifications, and employed Vue.js for a highly responsive customer tracking portal and driver app.
