Business Problem
Grocery retailers struggled with managing online orders, inefficient picking and packing processes, suboptimal delivery logistics, and a lack of personalized customer engagement. This led to high operational costs, customer dissatisfaction due to delayed or incorrect orders, and significant food waste.
Solution
Developed an intelligent grocery delivery platform using Laravel, integrating with mapping APIs for optimized delivery routes and store inventory systems. Implemented AI-powered personalized recommendations (OpenAI API), dynamic pricing, scheduled delivery slots, and a robust driver management system. Utilized WebSockets for real-time order status updates and customer communication.
Architecture
Micro-service oriented architecture with Storefront & Catalog Management, Order Management System, Picking & Packing Workflow, Delivery & Logistics Engine, and Recommendation Engine (OpenAI API). Employs Redis for caching product catalogs and real-time inventory. Uses Laravel Echo with WebSockets for real-time updates for customers, shoppers, and drivers. Queued jobs handle order processing, notifications, and analytics.
Challenges
Optimizing picking paths within grocery stores and managing perishable inventory, ensuring real-time inventory synchronization across multiple stores, dynamic pricing adjustments based on expiry dates and demand, securely processing high volumes of online payments, and coordinating efficient last-mile delivery with multiple drop-offs and time windows.
Performance Optimizations
Implemented Redis for caching product catalogs and search results to speed up shopping, optimized geographical queries for shopper assignment and delivery route planning, utilized Laravel Horizon for scalable processing of order notifications and delivery status updates, and employed client-side rendering with Vue.js for a smooth user experience across customer, shopper, and driver apps.
